Hi, My ex husband had a stroke 6 months ago. He is still can't use left side of his body and is on a feeding's tube. Today he started throwing up blood, he's in ER and they said so far the test showed it isn't coming from his stomach. Does this mean he's going to dye ? could it be from his lungs? What test should they do to find the problem? He is 67 years old ,5'10' and was an extremely heavey drinker all his life.He.s about 135 lbs.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Amarnath's Response
Welcome to hcm, The most common cause of bleeding from the naso gastric tube aspirate is due to mechanical injury in the stomach caused by constant irritation. The ER must have noticed it first and now it might have stopped coming. If it is not constant most probably nothing to worry much. Stomach wash with cold water and drugs help in stopping the bleeding episodes. Hope this explains with regards Dr.Amarnath
