Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My sister has just discovered that she has too much water on the brain . She is 61 years old and stared having bad headaches ,they couldn t find out why, so last Friday they did a MRI on her head yesterday she was told of the too much water problem. I know they MAY BE able to put in a stent but having trouble finding a dr to do the stent, most of the ones that do that are for children. Just very worried !
Excess water in the brain is called cerebral oedema and is caused by brain diseases such as stroke, brain cancers, meningitis, head trauma, and drinking too much water. This accumulation in the brain causes congestion and compression of the brain parts causing headaches.
You would need to take your sister to a neurosurgeon, who uses surgery to treat diseases of the brain. Possible ways to decongest the brain include drugs called diuretics which would remove the excess water from the brain to the kidney for excretion, corticosteroids would also be administered to reduce the inflammation caused by the edema, and surgical decompression which would be done by a neurosurgeon to let out excess water from the brain.
Further investigations would also be conducted to detect the underlying cause of the edema.
Please treat as urgent.
Best wishes.
