What Causes Watery And Smelly Diarrhea And Stomach Cramps For A 3-year-old?

Hello, my three year old son has had extremely watery and very smelly diarrhea for the past three days. It has only gotten worse, today he went at least 8 times. He is also complaining of stomach cramps. He still has an appetite though. What really surprised me is that he just had an accident while sleeping. He completely did diarrhea while sleeping although he is fully potty trained, should i be concerned?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms of the child seem to be related to gastroenteritis. The fact that the diarrehea is smelly is probably related to a bacterial infection.

I suggest to use daily probiotics and give him Pedialyte solution. I also suggest using a plain diet.

If the symptoms continue for more than three days I suggest using an antibiotic such as Metronidazole as prescribed by your doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
