What Causes Weakness And Slurred Speech After Taking Gabapentin?

Hi. My mom is 86 yrs old and started Gabapentin about 1 month ago. I just spent 1 week with her, no problems. 1 and 1/2 weeks later, now she s in a rehab, being transported in wheelchair because she s falling every day, lethargic, not talking clearly, are these side effects of the drug?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Gabapentin, like all meds, can be associated with side effects in some people. Loss of balance, dizziness and fatigue are common side effects of this medication. Extreme fatigue can lead to issues with disordered speaking in some people.

It may be best to discuss this medication with her doctor if she is not tolerating it, to see if an alternative can be used.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
