Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Weakness And Swelling In The Ankle And Feet?
I have taken flecainide for 5 years and am concerned about long term use of this drug. I had medical stress and echoe test done in June and am told that I have not worsened from last year s test but I notice a weakening in my muscles and ankle swelling after being on my feet for extended periods. I am 71 years old. Dr says it is part of aging. I am continuing to gain weight with each year of use. I also taken diltiazem since a beta blocker made me gain 20pounds in two months after beginning its use.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Causes of your difficulties may be neuropathy or ischemic issues. Neuropathic are seen in diabetes or injury of spine nerves.
If this is not your case, then these symptoms are indicating circulatory problems in legs which are common in this age and there may be present atherosclerosis that obstructs blood vessels and causes pain and blisters to form.
You should do Doppler ultrasound of the leg or CT angiography to rule out such obstructive changes and then it can be treated properly by medicines or by surgical and radiological procedures.
ALso, you should have Aspirine and have elastic stockings applied, and should avoid cold environment and long walks. In most cases, it can be managed with medicines but sometimes surgery may be required in severe cases.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein
