Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
When I get up from a sitting position, I start walking and suddenly feel very weak in my knees or calves as though my legs won t hold me up. I have to stop and wait until the feeling passes for fear of falling. It started a couple months ago and is happening more frequently now. I mentioned it to my primary doctor and she said to be careful by dangling legs before standing to walk. What could be causing this?
What you are facing is postural imbalance. This can be caused by unstable joints/muscle weakness/postural hypotension/Parkinson's disease.
May I know if you have got any underlying medical conditions or are you on any medications? It will need neurological examination ,detailed medical history by neurologist.Certain investigation may be then needed like MRI spine,CT scan head, nerve examination. As a prevention measure, you can, -stand up slowly from chair, have a supporting stick with you. -Practice some muscle strengthening exercises of back and legs with help of physical therapist. -Healthy diet and adequate hydration for overall well being.
Hope this information helps you. Wish you good health.
