What Causes Weakness In The Legs During Bowel Movements?

Hi, can I answer your health question? Please type your question here... Hi, I have sudden weakness in my legs while opening bowels. Bowel movement starts off solid but slowly becomes soft and I find myself having to stay on the toilet longer as it just doesn’t stop coming out of me. Plus whilst opening my bowels there’s a horrible feeling in both legs, it’s not cramps but a sort of aching feeling which makes me feel like my both legs are weakening or life is being taken out of them. Why is this happening to me?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You have not mentioned your age. Sudden weakness in your legs while passing motion could be related to electrolyte disturbances particularly hypokalemia. Go for BUN, serum creatinine and serum electrolytes as initial work-up. If these results are non-contributory you need to undergo detail neurological examination and examination of peripheral pulses in lower limbs. With your limited clinical input, nothing more inference can be made at present.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
