What Causes Weight Gain After Taking Prednisone For Bronchitis?

Took two courses of prednisone for asmatic bronchitis. No withdrawal problems, but gained twenty pounds .In stomach and breasts. Have been a steady 115 to120 pounds for years. Am 78 yrs of age.Any hope for me to lose this very uncomfortable weight?

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

Regarding your concern, I would ex-plain that prednisone as almost all the other corticosteroids has the potential for sodium and water retention and hence weight increase (in fact is a pseudo-increase, as it is not a real tissue mass increase).

The longer the period of corticosteroids therapy, the greater the weight gain effect.

But, don't worry about that!

If you don't have a decreased cardiac performance (measured by cardiac ultrasound), this effects will be relieved gradually without the need for additional treatment.

If you have a previous history of heart failure, you may need to adjust your daily diuretics dose.

So, I recommend you to consult with your attending doctor and review your overall clinical status, as I explained above.
