What Causes Weight Gain Along With Elevated ALT And AST Levels?

Hi just got my lab results for CMP. Iam a 40 year old, 5 11, 200 lbs, that recently gained some weight and indulged in semi high carb diet, moderate drinker. My LDL is 159, ALT 64, AST 41. Iam also taking tricot (fenofibrate). Should I be worried? Or do I need a lifestyle change.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Based on the laboratory results, it is indicating a two fold increase in liver enzyme levels, namely ALT and AST. This is indicative of mild liver cell dysfunction. It could be caused due to intake of alcohol, which you are stating that you are habituated to moderate drinking.
You need to stop consuming alcohol completely as it could cause further damage to the liver, which may be serious and land up in liver cell failure.
Along with stopping alcohol, you need to consume low fat, moderate carbohydrate and protein rich diet. You need to supplement adequately with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and lipotrophic factors. Do a regular follow-up once in 6 months of the functioning status of the liver by getting an ultrasound abdominal scan and liver function teats.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
Wish you good health.
