What Causes Weight Gain And Leg Muscle Cramps Inspite Of Suffering From Peripheral Neuropathy?

In the past year or so my Levothroxine prescription was reduced to 88mcg. I have been already diagnosed as having peripheral neuropathy with the accompanying weird legs and progressively worse pain. But is the hypothyroidism the cause of my weight gain and terrific leg muscle cramps, symptoms that have developed and also gotten worse. I am also suddenly anemic with so far no source of internal bleeding discovered by severl endoscopies. It s confusing. Can you give me your opinion? Thanks you, gloria potter.

Hello,

You have been recently diagnosed with anemia, you have history of hypothyroidism and are now experiencing weight gain. People with iron deficiency anemia often feel low in energy but gain weight due to underactive thyroid. Anemia may cause slowing of metabolism and hence low oxygen flow to your muscles and tissues causing sluggishness, muscle cramps and discomfort. Take home made balanced food with green vegetables like spinach and kale. Take protein rich diet to improve your general health. You can also take multi vitamins rich in B6, B12, once daily for 15-20 days as supplements.

You have history of peripheral neuropathy. Peripheral neuropathy caused by a vitamin deficiency can be treated and can be even reversed with vitamin therapy and an improved diet. You can take the help of a physiotherapist. Balanced diet, adequate rest and physical exercises effectively reduce the discomfort due to peripheral neuropathy. Get nerve conduction tests and biopsy if required done to detect the degree of peripheral neuropathy from which you are suffering. Get treated.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
