What Causes Weight Gain On Withdrawal From Synthyroid?

I took a month break from synthroid because I was experiencing hives and it was difficult to sleep. During that break, I gained 10 pounds. I am wondering if synthroid is life long medication and if there are other alternatives to it that do not cause the same side effects?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI,
I understand your query.
Yes, Synthyroid is a life long treatment. It's given to supplement low thyroid hormone produced by your body ( hypothyroidism ) which is a permanent problem once it starts.
That is why when you gave a break in Synthyroid consumption.. symptoms of hypothyroidism started.. one of them being weight gain.
You should consult your endocrinologist regularly/ get thyroid function tests done & get solution for any problems , get the medicine changed./ dosage managed.
Thanks.
Thanks.
