Hello and welcome to HCM,
The clinical features of weight gain and irregular periods are suspicious of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).
PCOS is characterized by abnormality in ovulation.
Certain investigations are required to diagnose PCOS.
These investigations include LH, FSH, LH/FSH ratio, testosterone and blood glucose.
The LH is raised in PCOS and thus the FSH/LH ratio.
Treatment is aimed to regularize the ovulation.
Metformin is also a mainstay of treatment to correct deranged blood glucose levels.
There are no side effects of medication when taken in prescribed dosage.

Thanks and take care
