What Causes Weight Loss Along With Skin Discoloration?

Haven t seen my sister in 3 years and was shocked at the change in her appearance. Loss of teeth, wider nose at the nostrils, darker (ruddy) skin tone, extreme weight loss (not anorexic looking but like her entire frame had shrunk to the size of a 10 year old). She is 57 years old and looks so much older - not because of wrinkles but because of the crushed facial appearance. She d not willing to admit a health issue. My first thought was that of drug abuse. Am very concerned and am looking for thoughts.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I think it looks like she is having malnutrition issue. She is not eating well. Also, drug addicts have this appearance. The nose is not getting bigger, but since she is slimmer, it is prominent.

She needs further examinations like a complete blood count and biochemical blood test. Also, uncontrolled diabetes gives weight loss. The further physical examination and anamnesis are needed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Olgeta Xhufka
