What Causes Weight Loss?

I have lost weight of 8 kg from 68 to 60kg in the past one year. Blood tests, sonography of abdomen, kidney, stool test etc have not indicated anything abnormal. I am 63 years old, having B.P for the last 15 years. Stress test also was o.k. I am having good appetite and not diabetic.

Dietitian & Nutritionist 's  Response
Hello,

As a Dietitian, to unravel the source of your problem, a comprehensive assessment would have to be done inclusive of a three day food diary to gain insight into exactly how many calories are being consumed vs. assessed needs, impact of medications, health history, sleep habits, stress levels, labs(that is what labs were done vs what might be nutritionally relevant but not done), and a personal story of your problem development obtained. The idea is to get at the source of the weight loss.

In the meantime, you may try a high calorie, high protein diet around the Mediterranean diet plan. In general, increase calories from good fats such as salmon, nuts, nut butters (unhydrogenated), extra virgin olive oil, and olives for extra calories add dried fruits with nuts for in between meal snacks. Eat larger portion sizes and include whole grain breads, noodles, and bran muffins. Drink whole milk and use whole fat milk products unless medically contraindicated.

Also, I advise a consultation with a local or Tele Nutrition Registered Dietitian Nutritionist to help you sort this out and get back on a healthy tract to avoid sarcopenia (loss of muscle mass).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Kathy Shattler
