What Causes Wheezing After A Cardiac Bypass Surgery?
My husband had quadruple cardiac bypass surgery & Mitral valve repair on Friday 3/10/2017. He also had cardiac Ablation on Wednesday 3/10. He came home yesterday 3/18. I noticed today that he seem to be wheezing. You can actually hear it from across the room. I have him using my Neubelizer with Albuterol. Is this normal? Is using the Neubelizer appropriate? Should we be alarmed? What else can we do?
No, this is not normal after cardiac surgery. The possibility of either bronchitis or pulmonary edema is more likely for his wheezing.
No harm in giving nebulization Albuterol. But you should definitely take him to the hospital and get done chest X-ray, PFT (Pulmonary Function Test) and 2d echo. Chest X-ray and PFT are needed for the diagnosis of bronchitis. 2d echo is must rule out pulmonary edema.
He may need diuretics or longer acting inhaled bronchodilators (Formoterol or Salmeterol) and inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) (Budesonide or Fluticasone) based on the diagnosis.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
