What Causes White Growth Under Big Toe Nail Despite Using Anti Fungal Creams?
I have white under my big toe nail. Have had it for about 4 years. My doctor thinks it s a fungus. I have tried OTC creams and fungus liquid drops. Nothing is working. I m looking for an EFFECTIVE anti-fungal to get rid of it. I do not think it is actually in the nail, but under it.
Hi & Welcome. It seems to be due to ineffective treatment of the fungal infection. The OTC anti-fungal creams and drops appear to be not effective in eradicating the fungal toe nail infection. You may need a course of oral anti-fungal medications like Terbinafine or Itraconazole. To be effective, the oral anti-fungal medications should be taken for 6 to 12 weeks. The result of successful treatment will be seen until the nail grows back completely. It may take 4 months or longer to eliminate an infection. Besides, your nail should be trimmed properly this helps reduce pain by reducing pressure and the drug can reach deeper layers of the nail. Avoid using tight fitting shoes. Don't use socks for prolonged period, change them every day. Any underlying cause like diabetes should be controlled with the medications. Hope the advice given would be beneficial to you in getting rid of fungal infection of big toe nail after consulting a dermatologist for the prescription.
