Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi! I have a question for my mother. She is around 60 years old and has chronic hereditary constipation. She is hypertensive, overweight and has a nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Recently, she complained of white spots in her stools. Stools she passed were soft but malodorous. Please tell me what could be the reason for this and any tests required, if any.
This may indicate that there is a problem with the absorption of food particularly fat.
Poor absorption of food (malabsorption), can occur due to different possible causes such as: (a) celiac disease (b) inflammatory bowel disease (c)disease of the gallbladder , liver, pancreas (d)parasitic infection (e)lactose or other food intolerance (f)side effect of medication
If this continues, she should consider visiting her doctors office. A stool sample can be sent to the lab for analysis. Blood tests or any other investigations would depend on examination and stool sample findings.
I hope this helps
