What Causes White Spots On The Back?

I've noticed small white spots on my son's back a fortnight ago, which now seems to be spreading to the front and chest area. These are around 1-2 cm in diameter and flaky when touched. There is no itch though. Could it be a vitamin deficiency. He's 13 yrs old.
