Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Yellow And White Coating On The Tongue?
I have a yellow - whiteish tongue. I cough off and on mostly in the morning. I have had choking and I thought it was just eating too fast but it has been happening for months. I had an esophagram and they diagnosed acid reflux but why is my tongue yellow and white? My FP was only concerned with swallowing and the choking. She referred me to a GI doc who did my colonoscopy who wrote a rx for Nystatin. Can reflux cause yellow - whiteish tongue? I do have allergies. A new edevelopment is my tongue now has a little split or opening in the middle.
I can understand your concern. There can be two possibilities in your case. Inadequate tongue cleaning or fungal infection known as candidiasis.
The first reason in yellowish white tongue can be presence of debris on the tongue that is not adequately cleaned. I would recommend you clean your tongue with tongue cleaner regularly and see the results if the coating disappears.
However, if tongue cleaning does not help in reducing the coating and it comes back again frequently, it is possible that you are having candidiasis due to intake of antibiotics. In such case, I would recommend you take antifungal medication such as Fluconazole 150 mg (Fole) once a day for 10 days.
If none of these solutions help, I would advise you to visit a dentist for clinical examination of the tongue and further investigations.
I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. I wish you feel better soon.
Best, Dr. Viraj Shah
