Hi there,
I have read your question carefully and understand your concern so I will try to explain as clearly as possible so that you can understand and thus clarify your concern. To begin with,
bilirubin is a pigment that is produced from the
hemoglobin degeneration of red blood cells that are in poor condition. This process is generated in the spleen, an organ whose function is to destroy the old blood cells. It is also part of the immune system. This pigment goes to the liver and is stored in the
gallbladder where it is part of the bile, which will then be excreted by the stool and will give the color to the stool. In addition to providing color in the feces, its main function is to help digest the fats you consume.
High bilirubin is a sign that you may be a problem in the liver, gallbladder or pancreas, or the presence of anemia. This problem may be due to:
Hepatitis, biliary tract obstruction due to gallstones or tumors in the liver or pancreas (or somewhere in the biliary tract), or
cirrhosis,
hemolytic anemia, among others.
To know for sure which is the cause, is necessary to investigate very well your clinical history, as well as the symptoms that you have presented besides the yellow coloration in the skin (jaundice), also it is necessary a complete physical examination, and images studies as a abdominal
ultrasound or CT scan.
My recommendation is that you go as soon as possible to the doctor to do all the above and thus determine the appropriate treatment to solve your problem. Try not to be scare until you know for sure what your diagnosis is.
If you have any other concern, feel free to ask me, i'll be glad to help you.
Regards,
Dr. Valentina Romero.
