Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello, my finger nails were yellow when I woke up this morning. No other symptoms, just yellow fingernails and skin around the nail and patches on the palms om my hands. It doesn t wash off, but it did start going away gradually throughout the day. I was wondering if this a form of jaundice or something else I should be more worried about. Thank you
Yellowish discoloration of nail can be because of various reasons, a few common ones are deficiency of minerals and vitamins, fungal infection and collection of lymph (a kind of fluid which is drained from tissues and go to veins) under the skin due to inappropriate drainage and gets collected under the skin making the nail and skin yellowish in color.
Since your symptom was transient as it cleared, I would rule out deficiency of any kind and also fungal infection. Please review with a physician if it occurs again and seek the reason for blockage in the flow of lymph. To rule out jaundice, you can get serum bilirubin done however it doesn't seem to be jaundice as it won't disappear so fast and also would appear in your eyes more than nails and palms.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Anoop Kumar, General & Family Physician
