What Could A Painful Lump Below The Hairline On Neck Indicate?
My girlfriend is complaining about a lump just below her hairline on her neck. She says she thinks it s a gland, but admits she doesn t really know what it is. She s complaining, saying it hurts whether or not it s touched. It sorta popped up out of no where. There is no redness or opening. She s had alot of seasonal allergie issues.
Hello and welcome to HCM, A lump below the neck line could be due to an enlarged lymph node or a soft tissue swelling. Pain in the lump could be due to infection in case of lymph node or involvement of nerve in case of soft tissue. A clinical assessment followed by an aspiration cytology needs to be done. In aspiration cytology, cells are aspirated from the swelling with the help of a fine needle. The aspirated cells are spread on a slide, stained with appropriate stains and examined microscopically. After studying the aspirated cells, the nature and character of the lesion can be determined and thus management can be planned. I suggest you to consult your primary healthcare provider for clinical assessment, aspiration cytology and management of the lump.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
