What Could Be Painful Water Retention In Legs For A 38 Years Old Female With High BP And History Of Several Surgeries?

My legs are retaining water to the point where they hurt. They have been like this 2 weeks. It has happened before but not this long. I am a 38 yr old female. I have had a lot of problems with my back several surgeries, and taking 9 different medications for various things. I also have High blood pressure. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this fluid retention in your legs. Fluid retention in legs can be fro several and diverse causes. When it affects both legs at the same time, then the problem is not originating from the legs somewhere else. This could be the kidneys, liver, heart or low protein in your system. I will suggest that you get consulted and these various possible causes investigated.

For now raising the legs, reducing salt intake, and avoiding upright positions would offer some relief while you get the cause figured out and treated adequately.

I hope this addresses your query fully. Thank you so much for using our services and please feel free to ask for clarifications if need be. I wish you the best of health.

Hi, i have read your query & according to my opinion there is so many cause of pedal edema ( swelling in leg) 1) If you are taking antihypertensive medicine amlodipine then you should replace this medicine with other anti hypertensive ,because pedal edema is side effect of amlodipine.2)This is may be due to congestive heart failure, hypothyroidism, hypoproteinemia. So you should get blood test for LFT & T3,T4, TSH.After that you should consult with your doctor. Thanks
