What Could Be Sudden Right Ear Deafness In A 49 Years Old Male With 10% Hearing In Audiogram Test While On Gupison 20,trental 200 Mg?

Hello Doctor, I am an Indian 49 years old male, living in Dubai. I woke up on wednesday morning ( 8-Jan-2014 ) wth total deafness in my right ear. I went to the doctor the next morning. He gave me an injection immediately and told me that i have come at the right time. He gave me some medicines , GUPISONE 20, TRENTAL 200 mg and another one and told me to take it for 10 days. My audiogram test shows just 10 percent hearing in my right ear. He wants to do a MRI scan for my brain to check if there is a tumor. What are my chances of me hearing again. Brandon

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hi there,

Thanks for your query.

Sudden hearing loss can be due to either infection of the middle ear or, pathology of the nerve which conveys audio sensations to the brain.

Chances of recovery depend on the cause. Prompt treatment of infection of the middle ear- which is responsible for hearing- will lead to complete recovery.

On the other hand, degree of recovery will depend on the efficacy of treatment of injury, compression over, or a tumor of the nerve- which carries audio sensations to the brain, as the case may be.

Consult your doctor and apprise him of my opinion. I am certain that he will agree with me, order required tests, and- based on the reports- will advise you the best course of action.

If you find my response helpful and informative, do not forget an “excellent” (5-star rating) to my answer, to ENCOURAGE ALL doctors- engaged in social service- to render sound advice to the FREE queries.
