What Could Be The Cause Of Swelling, Fluid Build Up, Itching And Scaling On The Helix Of The Ear ?

hello, the helix of my right ear is swollen, maybe four times that of the left. I have had this problem before but swelling went down on its own with no treatment. I have a feeling there s a fluid build up. Any thoughts? No itching or discomfort, but there is pain if I touch it. No real redness but from slight scratching the skin is beginning to peel a little.

Hi,
You have had this problem before? Did you get any ear piercing done in recent times?
Sometimes when the cartilage gets inflamed it may lead to swelling of the helix. As you say it is tender to touch it may be your cartilage that is inflamed.
You can take some pain killers which you have used in the past. They may control the pain and inflammation.
Try giving some cold compresses to the area. Your symptoms should reduce by this. If it still doesn't then maybe you should show it to an ENT specialist.

ENT Specialist Dr. S K Pratinidhi's  Response
Hi welcome to health care magic forum,

Swelling of helix of right ear with cystic consistency without pain or discomfort indicate haematoma auris. It may be spontaneous or post traumatic.

It is due to accumulation of blood or serum/fluid.

Haematoma auris usually painless . Secondary infection may cause to pain.

But it is unusual to peel the skin.

In my opinion you can take a broad spectrum antibiotic and antihistamine with an antinflammatory medication for 1 or 2 days.

But if no relief ,I would suggest you to see an ENT specialist for thorough clinical examination.

regards.
