What Could Be The Cause Of Swelling & Pain In Ankle And Foot?

Sir, my father aged 62 years is suffering from pain and swelling in lower ankle and foot fingers region. We consulted a doctor and got an ECHO test and PFT test done. According to the report there is a problem in the lungs but heart seems ok(systolic dysfunction grade I). Its been 8 days but the pain and swelling refuses to go away. I am worried regarding other common cause of such a pain, i.e., kidney problem. His blood pressure level is normal. But he recently suffered an asthma attack, altough he s not an asthma patient. I am worried about the pain and swelling as refuses to go away. He not a diabetic. The doctor we consulted is a respiratory specialist. Should i consult another doctor, if yes please tell me which specialist i need to go to. Should i also get a kidney test done? Please suggest me the risks involved.

Hello
The main problem is ANKLE swelling and pain in foot and fingers .
E CH O & PFT normal , kidney function tests are also normal , in spite of this there is problem.
One thing you mentioned in your query that your father got an attack of asthma ( although he is not a patient of asthma in past ) .He is not a diabetic .
Ankle swelling , pain , asthmatic attack ( according to you) but in my opinion this was not an attack of asthma , rather it was DYSPONEA ( PAROXYMAL NOCTURAL ) .
In my opinion your father may be a patient of congestive heart failure ( very early stage ) , as you mentioned that systolic dysfunction grade 1 also present . Diagnosis can be confirmed by consultation with a physician as there are certain parameters which decide about C H F.
2nd& others reason of ankle edema may be due to varicose veins ,cyclic edema or gravitational effects but in patients with these conditions , there is no jugular venous hyper tension at rest with pressure over the abdomen.
While it is common in C H F .
My only aim was to high light these points so that you can understand all the things regarding CHF & ankle edema.
Other reasons are anemia , hypoproteinemia .
In my opinion consult a physician and get his opinion as physical examination as well clinical examination is very important in your father case.
Good luck.
