What Could Be The Reason For Having Swelling In Elbow?

My father is 80 years old, normally fit and well. Had pacemaker fitted two months ago. The same arm today is very swollen especially the elbow area but he does not have a temperature and is not in any pain with it. But the area is red and hot. What could it be and should it be a worry, and what can be done to reduce the swelling, preferably no medication if possible. Thank you.

Dear patient,

Thanks for the query. It will be important for your dad to be seen, as one of the complications that can be seen with pacemakers and other invasive devices is vein clotting and obstruction, which can give rise to redness and swelling. An upper extremity ultrasound will likley be needed to rule this out.

Hope that helps wish you the best,
