What Could Breakout Of Rashes On Legs And Arms With Painful Skin Shedding In Knee Indicate?

I broke out in a rash last Sunday on my feet, legs and arms. It was extremely itchy and I couldn t sleep. I took Benadryl on top of my already 2 allergy medicines, used cortisone cream and took oatmeal baths. I went to the allergist on Thursday and she assumed it was an allergy to sunscreen. I have not used sunscreen for over a week and a half. I am on prednisone and a steroid cream. I only have 2 pills left but my problem is that I know have blisters/ losing skin. I have two blisters on my thumb where I had bumps from my rash. But now I am losing skin near my groin, inner thigh and on my knee. It is extremely painful and it s hard to walk. I don t know what to do. I still take oatmeal baths for my rash and I have tried neosporin but nothing is working. Any ideas what to do?

Hello,

You are taking Prednisone orally, sometimes people with sensitive skin complain of serious allergic reaction due to prednisone tablets. Since you are losing skin due to blisters you can stop taking prednisone since you have only two pills left. You should inform your treating doctor about the medicines that cause you allergy. Continuing to take it may cause complications like swelling of face, tongue, throat, troubled breathing, etc.

Take plenty of water, prednisone takes about 24 hours to get eliminated out of your body. After that you will get relieve. Take natural diuretics like cucumbers, parsley, coffee, soups, juice to get most of the medicine flushed out of your system. Apply ointment Soframycin in the areas that are itchy and causing discomfort.

You can take non-sedating antihistamines, one SOS when required for relieve if you are not allergic to it. To get relief from pain you can take acetaminophen, one SOS when required after food. In case of troubled breathing or skin discomfort, you should visit ER, for immediate medical support & cleaning or dressing.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
