Hi,

Implanon contains etonogestrel, a natural female sex hormone called progesterone that is a long term birth control implant is used in the prevention of unwanted pregnancies from unprotected sexual intercourses. But like other medications this implant has some side effects of its own. The most common side effect of this implant is irregular bleeding, especially in the first 6-12 months.

Other side effects are vaginal discharge, vaginal bleeding, spotting or withdrawal bleeding between periods, missed or absent periods, heavy, scanty or prolonged bleeding during period etc. These side effects are mild as well as self limiting and usually go away over time without any medical treatment. But if these side effects persist for long or bother you then you should consult your prescribing doctor first for medical help.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello,

You are on Implanon since a year now. You do not get your periods because of it. All of a sudden you are getting brown discharge. Brown discharge that you are getting is due to hormonal changes. Ideally it should stop but if it does not and you are uncomfortable, you can get your Implanon removed.

Sometimes it may be black / brown discharge, and others it could be blood, and even heavy at times. If it becomes constant and heavy then you may need to take an iron supplement, to prevent anemia. Hormonal symptoms are also experienced when coming off the Implanon as your body rebalances its hormones. Stay away from addictions if any.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
