Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a burning sensation in the anus and fairly feeble smears of blood on the toilet paper after defecation. (The burning sensation wanes after about 5-10 minutes from the end of defecation.) Should I suspect colon cancer, or should I suspect the attack of piles?
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history of burning sensation in the anus and feeble smears of blood on toilet paper after defecation. The burning sensation weans off 5-10 minutes after defecation, wants to know whether to suspect colon cancer or attack of piles: With the history you have provided the most probable causes are: Fissure-in-ano or Peri-anal excoriation. I would advise you the following in such a situation: Get an examination done by a General Surgeon preferably. Sitz bath in a tub with warm water. Mild laxative if there is hard stool. Send the stool and blood sample for tests. If there is an evidence of infection you will be given a course of an antibiotic so that the infection part and your symptoms will get cured. Colon cancer can be detected only by colonoscopy and CT scan of the abdomen and needs to be done if you do not get complete relief with medical management. Pile will have more bleeding and no other symptoms like pain or burning.
