What Could Cause A Throbbing Vein In The Neck, Fatigue And Severe Craving For Salt?

Hi, I am a 35 year old woman. I am having a vein jumping in my neck on the right side, and craving salt like crazy. Also, I think I am fighting off some kind of sinus infection. I have been struggling with some kind of cold for much of the fall, and am very tired. Is something more serious going on? I missed my annual visit to my doctor due to having a bad cold 2 weeks ago and they didn't get me on the schedule until the end if January. Should I be concerned enough to see Dr sooner?

Hi there,

Thanks for your query.

A pulsatile vein in the neck is suggestive of either, conditions which lead to increased blood circulation; a defect of the heart valve (called Aortic valve incompetence).; or, an overactive Thyroid.

Causes of salt cravings include dehydration (drinking less water), electrolyte imbalance (due to lack of electrolytes, particularly magnesium, in the meals)
constant mental stress/anxiety, underactive Adrenal glands (located on the upper end of kidneys), or a kidney-defect leading to excessive discharge of sodium (salt consists of sodium + chloride) leading to sodium deficiency; or, a thyroid problem.

Consult your doctor and apprise him of my opinion. I am certain that he will agree with me, order required tests, and- based on the reports- will prescribe suitable/modified treatment as advised.
