What Could Cause Light Colored Pale Stools After Taking Erythromycin For 2 Days With Blood Tests Being Normal?
I have a patient that after one or two days of erythromycin she develops light-colored pale stools with no other side effects. Blood test reveal no liver enzyme or bilirubin elevations and there are no other symptoms. This has happened on two occasions with both regular erythromycin and a Z pack. What could be causing this? She has so many allergies that E-Mycin is one of only 2or 3 antibiotics she can tolerate? What do you suggest?

Hi Thanks for asking HCM It can be a side effect of erythromycinintrahepatic cholestasis. You can repeat the liver enzymes and bilirubin tests again. The pale colored stools indicate that the bilirubin is blocked to intestinal tract. The drug should be discontinued. An ultrasound investigation should be advised in such case also. A consultation with gasteroenterologist should be given. Let me know if you have any further query.
