What Could Cause Orange Tongue Coating?
Hi, i have systemic amyloidosis and one of the symptoms is macroglossia. I am being treated for the amyloidosis and had my last dose of chemotherapy 3 weeks ago. Amyloid has deposited in my heart, GI tract and liver as well as soft tissue. The issue I am writing about today is an orange coating on my tongue which has been present for about 6 weeks now - my mouth also tastes acidic all the time. This may be unrelated to the amyloidosis but is causing me some discomfort. I am female and 49 years old , a non smoker and (apart from the amyloidosis) have always been fit and healthy.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have orange tongue coating condition known red patches over the tongue with loss of papilla that contains taste buds. The patches can also appear as a result of hot food and beverage . It is not a harmful condition but can at times cause pain and burning sensation during eating anything spicy,hot,acidic or salty.
The exact cause of Geographic tongue is still unknown and at times some co-relation is seen as it can be seen in patients with some skin disease like Psoriasis but the exact evidence is not present.
In case of pain and discomfort OTC painkiller like Ibuprofen or Tylenol can be taken. Mouth rinses containing steroids and antihistamines can be helpful. You can apply steroid and numbing agent containing ointment like Kenalog in Orabase for relief if there is burning or pain due to inflammation.
Sucking ice pops and cold water rinses can help. Also maintain proper oral hygiene and avoid spicy and hot food .
