What Could Cause Repeatedly Food Getting Stuck In My Nasopharynx?

I have been repeatedly been getting food stuck in my nasopharynx? (Soft palate?) around 3-4 times a week for a while now. I don’t know if I’m suddenly swallowing wrong or what, but it’s very uncomfortable and I can’t manually get it out, I have to wait for it to pass. Should I see my primary physician? Is there any way to prevent this?

Hello,

Repeated food getting stuck up in the nasopharynx happens mainly because of problems in the food pipe, tumor or foreign body, narrowing or ring formation on the food pipe. It can also be due to aging and nerve problems. You are suggested to drink plenty of water and fluids. lose weight, reduce stress.

It can be GERD. You can take antacids or PPIs for relief. Take food rich in fiber. Avoid smoking, avoid taking alcohol, do not do drugs. Get clinically examined by a GP and get done endoscopy. Endoscopy will help to detect problems in the food pipe. Your treating Physician will do other examinations like barium X-ray, esophageal muscle test, imaging scan like CT, MRI to detect the pathology causing you symptoms.

Your treatment will depend on the pathology detected. You will be given conservative treatment, physical therapy to co-ordinate swallowing muscles and re-stimulate the nerves to help swallowing better and prevent the feeling of something getting stuck. Teaching swallowing technique by physical therapy. Sometimes, depending on the diagnosis made, the treating doctor may recommend surgery. Take liquid food so that you do not strain your throat.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
