What Could Frequent Neck Pain At The Top Below The Left Ear Indicate?

I am a 52 year old male in good health. No medications. Run at least ten miles every week, also bike and rollerblade. During the past year it feels like my left ear gets covered over with a flap when I sleep on my left side. When I pull on my ear lobe in the morning that seems to open the flap. For the past ten years I sometimes get moderate shooting pain near the top of my neck. During the past 48 hours it has increased significantly so that I experience shooting pain at least once per minute. Sometimes as often as every ten seconds. It s concentrated directly below my left ear. I do not have a history of ear wax problems. I was treated for TMJ when I was in high school. My maternal grandfather had neuralgia. Thank you.
