What Could Headaches, Diarrhoea And Temporary Incoherence Together Indicate For A 13-year-old?

Hello Dr. Rynne, We just got news that our dear friend in Philadelphia had to rush her 13 year old son to the hospital. He d been complaining of headaches and also had severe diarrhea, and at some point he was also somewhat incoherent. Presently he s unresponsive. What could be wrong?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

In a 13-year-old child, severe diarrhoea indicates rotavirus infection most probably. He should be given enough fluid orally or intravenous. He should be also supplemented with zinc for incoherence.

Headache may be accompanied due to dehydration. Hospital admission is necessary if diarrheal fluid loss is severe.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Nirav Nimavat, General & Family Physician
