What Could Numb, Swollen And Tender Ankle Post A Hit On Ankle Indicate?

Last night I hit my ankle on the side of my wooden bed frame. Later in the night after nursing my son I stood to put him in the crib and my whole foot went numb causing me to wit it each way and fall to the groud. Luckily my son wasn t harmed but now I am left with a swollen and tender ankle that is still somewhat numb. Why could this be? Is it just sprained or should I go see a Dr monday? Thanks so much.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You hit your ankle on the side of your wooden bed frame. Later your whole foot got numb. Numbness, tingling and swelling of the ankle or foot is commonly caused by trauma or injury as well as conditions affecting the nervous system. A blood clot in the leg may also produce the symptoms you are experiencing. Pain, tenderness and limp after injury raises the possibility of a fracture or ligamentous injury.

Numbness is typically caused by damage, compression or irritation to the nerves. Give rest to your foot, don't unnecessarily strain. When fracturing an ankle, the swelling can put pressure on the nerves and cause a loss of feeling (numbness) in the ankle, foot or toes. You are suggested to get clinically examined by an orthopedics / GP. Get X-ray and other imaging tests done if required so that the pathology causing you symptoms can be detected & treatment started.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
