What Could Recurring Episodes Of Extreme Dizziness Indicate?

Our 46 year old son has bouts of dizziness and even extreme episodes. Thought possibly to be an inner ear infection. He had a pennicillan shot, a cortisone shot and a round of antibiotics. This began a week ago, and he seemed to improve. Today out of the blue he had another extreme episode of dizziness. What type of specialist should he see?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Since your son has history of inner ear infection for which he has been treated with cortisone, penicillin shot and antibiotics and now he is experiencing episodes of dizziness which may be indicative of vertigo. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is one of the most common reasons for dizziness and balance issues.

You are suggested to get your son clinically examined and tested for Vertigo. He will have to go through audiology tests, ENG, VNG and MRI. His treatment (medicine, canalith repositioning or surgery) will depend upon the pathology detected and his clinical conditions. He is suggested to stay at rest, avoid driving, avoid any heavy work and cut on addictions if any.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
