What Could Severe Abdominal Cramps, Fatigue And Vomiting Indicate?

My husband started complaining that his stomach doesn t feel well periodically a couple weeks ago. He said so again at dinner last night. This morning he woke up with severe cramps that persisted all day. He vomited once this morning. He has been in bed exhausted all day. He does not have a fever. He has not moved his bowels since yesterday. He has eaten toast, tea, a yogurt and some ginger ale. What do you think is going on? My husband is 52, 5 10 , 205 lb, body builder type frame, exercises almost daily, generally healthy, high-stress job.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The severe stomach cramps with fatigue and vomiting indicate gastric or intestine infection with some sort of bacteria or virus which may be ingested via some sort of food or beverages. Primary care points would be as below:
- Dietary precautions to consume plenty of liquids in sessions which should be preferably boiled water, lemon juice, coconut water
- Prefer to serve easily digestible food stuffs such as rice, curd, dal and avoid all spices, non veg, junk food, dairy fat
- Eat small, frequent meals at intervals
- Keep stomach empty by 50% of satiety value
- You should avoid sleeping for 2 hours after lunch or dinner
- Prescription of anti-emetic as Ondancetron, proton pump inhibitor as Lanzoprazole, anti spasmodic medicines such as Drotaverine HCL, GI specific antibiotic as Rifaximine or else as per choice of his treating physician.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
