What Could Sharp, Stabbing Pain In Lower Back And Hip Indicate?

My 21 year old son says he started having left lower back pain, more above his hip area than toward his spine, this afternoon which have now turned to sharp, stabbing pains. He thinks it is his kidney or liver. He has recently undergone a treatment of strong anti-biotics . Is this a concern? does he need to see a dr?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the sharp pain in lower back and hip do indicate possible issue of renal damage from strong antibiotics as acute interstitial nephritis, acute tubular necrosis, renal papillary necrosis and others. The hydronephrosis pain do present over lower back as well apart from kidney angle. However, it is strongly recommended to consult your doc for immediate ultrasound evaluation of the abdomen & pelvis.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
