What Could The Large Painful Lump On The Throat Be?
My friend has a lump in his throat that is so big it is sticking out of his neck just below his jaw and slightly under his ear. He is in pain when ever he tries to swallow, cough, or blow his nose. The lump has been there three days and yesterday he almost went to the ER because it was beginning to interfere with his ability to breathe. He does not have a fever or any flu like symptoms. He is 34 years old. His neck is not stiff or causing him pain when he turns his head unless there is pressure on the area of the lump or growth. Any ideas what it might be?
Since the lump is only of three days duration this is most probably infective in origin causing a parapharyngeal abscess and this the following is advised. To go to ER. CT scan of the neck to have accurate diagnosis. Incision and drainage if there is an abscess. If lump only then further evaluation with FNAC and have definitive management as per the cause found. Get him admitted as this can a dire emergency needing emergency surgery if needed.
