My husband had open heart surgery. Took two days to fully wake up. Each time he started waking, he would get violent, his np would drop. IV was increased and he would be put back to sleep. What is cause. Are there any residual affects. He s had ct scan before fully waking up as Dr thought he may have had a stroke but ct scan was negative

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Hyper arousal may be part of various conditions such as:
- Drug related toxicity
- Post anesthesia effects
- Alcohol withdrawal or other substances related issues
- Cerebral circulation problems
- Electrolyte disturbances
- Others

However, a detailed study of relevant investigations over and above the CT scan is must for the co relation of the possible causes and management guidelines of this.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
