1. Get an X-ray Skull lateral view to rule out adenoid hypertrophy which is a common cause of nasal obstruction at this age. Does he have a history of mouth breathing or snoring?
2. Have him undergo an E.N.T. check-up to rule out chronic tonsillitis.
3. The above conditions are the most common cause of refusal to eat in children.
4. Other important causes of loss of appetite which must be ruled out are:
a) liver problems
b) foreign body ingestion
c) acid reflux
d) constipation
e) gut infections and worm infestations
5. While you are checking for the above, and in the absence of other symptoms, you may give him appetite stimulants (containing cyproheptadine) and multi vitamin syrups.
6. If the above are ruled out, then there are many rarer causes which must be investigated by your local child specialist.
