General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,
1) Your son was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis with sclerosing cholangitis
2) Surgery was for ulcerative colitis. And Bile duct stenting was done to prevent further stricture of sclerosing cholangitis.
3) Urso (ursodeoxy-cholic acid tablets) are liver protective and boost up liver function.
4) As his liver function is affected due to sclerosing cholangitis, he need supplement of carbohydrate and protein to compensate deranged liver function. Also to protect liver from further damage due to metabolism of lipids, try to keep fat content in diet low.
5) As bile duct is obstructed, less bile would reach to intestine therefore, fat digestion is affected, secondary to this all fat soluble vitamins would not be able to be absorbed by intestine from diet and leads to vitamin deficiencies. Thus vitamin supplement is also essential.
