General & Family Physician, Dr. Priyanka's Response
Hi,
PEP stands for post-exposure prophylaxis, a course of antiretroviral medications taken after potential exposure to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) to reduce the risk of infection. It was taking PEP as soon as possible after potential exposure increases its effectiveness.
If you have already started taking PEP, it is important to continue taking it as prescribed and to finish the entire course of medication, even if you feel well. A whole PEP course can help reduce the risk of HIV infection. However, there is no guarantee that PEP will prevent HIV infection. It is essential to practice safe sex and other preventive measures to reduce the risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
