Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am female, 65 years old, type 2 diabetic for 23 years. I have been sick with the flu for a week now. Have not taken much Lantus because I m not eating much. The blood sugar has been ok with one low episode during this sickness. The main problem is my lips have been so blistered. The top layer of skil just peels off and I ve been keeping Aquaphor on them and they are beginning to get better. Could this be caused by ketoacidosis and what can I do to help speed the healing of my lips? I ve started eating again and taking my Lantus, as well as drinking more water. Many thanks for your help!
You have symptoms of blisters on the lips which could be due to the dehydrated oral mucosa. It could be due to the systemic condition of underlying diabetes. Need not to worry. I would suggest you to - Keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water. - Avoid pricking lips. - Avoid hot, salty, spicy and sharp food. - Avoid exposure to sunlight and apply lip balm to moisten lips. - Suck on ice pops. - Take vitamin B2 and niacin supplement. If the condition keeps on persisting, then you should consult oral pathologist for proper examination and rule out other systemic conditions. The doctor may start treatment accordingly.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
