What Do Elevated GGT And ALT Levels Indicate?

Good Evening, I am looking for some advise for my blood test results... I have alarmingly high GGT and ALT results. The normal GGT says 12-37 u/l and normal ALT says 36 u/l. my result was GGT 154 and ALT 371. Any thoughts on the problem and recommendations to avoid further damage would be appreciated. I am 36 without any previous major problems. I used to drink approximately 6 beers per day for 15 years until 2012. Now I drink occasionally. I have cronic lower back pain along with sciatica pain daily on my right leg. Approximately 2 months ago, I had a hernia pushed back into my stomach as my muscle was tightening around my bowel, but have not heard from a surgeon yet to have the hole in the muscle wall fixed.

This high ALT level requires immediate investigation. Alcohol is a potential cause although we expect patients who have alcohol-related toxicity to have even higher elevations of AST (almost double compared to ALT). You haven't provided the results of the rest liver tests (like ALP, AST, bilirubin and other useful tests like INR, albumin, serum protein electrophoresis), so I can't have the complete picture. In cases like yours a radiological evaluation of the liver is required, serology for various types of infections and autoimmune hepatitis and serial measurements of all liver function tests. So concluding my answer, I suggest you to visit your primary care physician for immediate investigation. In the meantime you should cut down on alcohol to avoid worsening of your liver function.
