Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
MY HUSBAND IS 90 YEARS OLD AND HAD A SUPRA PUBIC PROSTATECTOMY AT AGE 66. HIS PSA HAS BEEN INCREASING YEARLY OVER THE PAST 4 YEARS FROM 3.8 TO NOW 5.7. THEY DID LEAVE THE SHELL OF THE PROSTATE AS IT WAS ATTACHED TO THE BOWEL. IT WAS BENIGN. HE HAS SYMPTOMS OF CANCER, BUT THESE SYMPTOMS COULD ALSO BE ATTRIBUTED TO OTHE PROBLEMS SUCH AS HGH BLOOD SUGAR, COMPRESSION FX L5 PROGRESSING. I AM HIS CARE GIVER AND THINK IT BEST TO LET THINGS TAKE THEIR COURSE. HE IS NOT A SURGICAL CANDIDATE DUE TO CARDIAC CONDITIONS. AM I RIGHT TO LEAVE HIM LONE?
For a PSA to be worrying it usually need levels higher than 10. Since your husband has a PSA of 5.8 it should be due to benign enlargement. Certain symptoms of prostate enlargement can be treated with medications. I wouldnt advise any major surgical intervention at his age.
Kind Regards
