What Do Elevated Ammonia Levels In The Brain Indicate?

I recently was told (about 4 weeks ago) I have high levels of ammonia in my brain and the only way to help is thru a good constant bowel movement. I get confused a lot and have poor balance. Is this something that may improve or deal with the rest of my life?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You may be suffering from liver disease. The protein on absorption in the intestine converted to ammonia which is not metabolized by the diseased liver and accumulates in the brain. So the advice is to get three or four bowel movements daily by laxative and decreasing protein intake.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Varinder Joshi
