What Do Elevated Creatinine Levels Indicate?

My mum is a diabetic patient and has been on Metformin and glicazide medication for many years. In her recent blood test revealed that her creatinine level is 151. With this recent result, the doctor has stopped her Metformin medication. Is this level critical and result in Chronic Kidney Disease?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

In simple language, elevated creatinine level indicates your kidney function is not normal. There may be possibility of chronic renal disease.

But we have to confirm it by urine output, creatinine clearance, blood urea level and other kidney function tests as sometimes dehydration also causes raised creatinine level.

I will suggest you to review here with detailed history or consult with the nephrologist with reports and keep her well hydrated. Watch for other symptoms like decreased urine output, fever, breathlessness, abdominal pain.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shyam B. Kale
